As reported by Bloomberg, India's semiconductor shipments skyrocketed by an astonishing 34 times to reach US$152 million. [1] Cambodia, not far behind, experienced an incredible growth rate of 698%, nearly matching Japan's figures at US$166 million. Moreover, Thailand has emerged as a strong contender in the US chip market, with a remarkable 62% increase in trade with the United States. Delving deeper into the rise of these Asian forces, we explore the opportunities they present in reshaping the semiconductor industry.

Marvell Technology's World-Class Design Centre in Ho Chi Minh City

Marvell Technology, a leading US chip vendor, has unveiled its plans to establish a state-of-the-art design center in Ho Chi Minh City [2]. This facility will serve as a hub for advanced semiconductor engineering, providing a premier technology workplace for professionals seeking to enhance their skills and careers. With Marvell Technology's investment, Vietnam is set to position itself as a prominent player in the semiconductor industry, attracting top talents and fostering technological advancement.

Thailand's Ambitious Plans in the Semiconductor Industry

Thailand, home to PTT, the country's largest conglomerate and oil and gas company, is actively seeking investments from Korean companies to expand its supply chains in the semiconductor industry and electronic vehicles sector [3]. PTT aims to collaborate with numerous Korean firms, fostering partnerships that will bolster Thailand's presence in these domains. The country's ambition to chart a new course reflects its commitment to embracing cutting-edge technologies and attracting international investment.

Sequoia Capital India's Investment in InCore Semiconductors

In a notable development, Sequoia Capital India has invested $3 million in InCore Semiconductors [4], marking its second fund infusion in an Indian semiconductor startup. The investment was announced during the 'SemiCon India FutureDesign Roadshow' event, part of the Indian government's initiative to promote next-generation semiconductor designers in the country. As India gradually evolves into a semiconductor powerhouse, such investments contribute to its growth and strengthen its position in the global semiconductor market.

Indonesia's Potential in the Electric Vehicle Segment

Indonesia is attracting increased international investment in its electric vehicle (EV) segment, with PowerCo, Volkswagen's battery subsidiary, expressing interest in establishing a battery ecosystem in collaboration with partners like Ford, Vale, and Huayou Cobalt. Indonesian President Joko Widodo's visit to Germany for the Hannover Messe 2023 further solidified these efforts [5], as he met with representatives from PowerCo, BASF, and Eramet. Indonesian Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia revealed that PowerCo plans to collaborate with Vale, Ford, Huayou, Eramet, Merdeka Gold Copper, and Kalla Group, signaling a significant push towards developing a robust EV battery industry in Indonesia.

What does these hold for the future of the semiconductor supply chain?

The remarkable growth and potential displayed by emerging markets in the semiconductor industry brings forth numerous opportunities for collaboration and innovation, as well as a reconfiguration of future supply chains. This could possibly open up avenues for businesses to leverage the expertise, resources, and technological advancements fostered by these countries, propelling the industry forward into a new era of semiconductor manufacturing.
